For many years we haved used VOIP telephone service and have been pleasantly suprised. We have used many different services and have been happy with most and Packet 8 was the first internet phone service we ever used. Of course, if you are able to have VOIP service then we HIGHLY recommend it to conventional landlines.
Site:
With any service the ability to manage your account online is a must and Packet 8 allows you to do that but what you can do is limited. The actual usability is very rudamentary. You can make changes to your plan or view bills and that is about it. If you need to monitor usage onine, this service is not for you.
Features:
One of the best parts of using an internet phone service is the features, they can’t be beat. Many of the features that are extra with a landline service provider come standard. Here are the standard features you can expect;
Installation:
The installation is very easy. They send a converter box which you simply plug your phone line into and hook your high speed internet connection up to either from the modem or network router.
Service:
When we first started using VOIP we were concerned that the reliability and service would be an issue and we kept our landline for a month while we tried it and that was all the time we needed before we dropped the landline service. The call quality is great with speeds of and up slower speeds can have echo.
With Packet 8 you can take your phone service with you. For instance you travel to a family members house, that has broadband access, you can take the converter box with you and still use your service.
There are some aspects of VOIP service that are undesirable. If your broadband service or power goes out so does your phone service. The service, as far as we know, does not work with Satellite or Cellular/Wireless service providers.
Pricing:
Aside from the features pricing is probably one of the best aspects of using VOIP and Packet 8 has probably the best pricing in the industry. Their plans start as low as 14.99
Summary:
Packet 8 is a solid 6 year old company that offers not only a very competetive rate for their service but also offers plenty of features to go with the great prices. Their service is very reliable and the quality is great. The old saying you get what you pay for obviously doesn’t apply with this company because they give so much more.
The online administration is horrible and the fact that if you lose power or broadband service you lose your phone service as well is a downer (although this is true for any VOIP that we are aware of.
Overall Packet 8 is probably one of the best under exposed VOIPs out there. We would give a rating of a 4.5 but the online management of your service is just un excusable so we have to rate them at a 3.5.
please wait...
